Artwork

Colours, people, nature, all influence each and every stroke on my blank canvas.

Working on the Abour Week Ladies
Many of my paintings have been inspired by my island, Mauritius. Eyes wide open, I would scrutinize little details here and there that reminded me of my 'Sea, Sun, Sand' country. I haven't been living on the motherland for the past five years and it goes without saying that I miss it...

Recently moving to Tsitsikamma, South Africa, gave me a whole new perspective on life, nature and conservation. I've always been passionate about nature and depicting that is an essential part of my art. Now however, the bold interconnecting lines between the different elements (often humans and trees, ferns, birds, sun, moons, you name it...) make even more sense to me. Preserving nature and its beauty while including people in the picture is what I aim for, and this is often reflected in my work.

Artists I look up to:

Erica (YAN 2014)

One species of heath (Erica spp.)
Erica, inspired by Tsitsikamma
Driving on the N2, I couldn't help but be in awe as we passed through the Lowland Fynbos, which is part of the smallest but richest of the six floral kingdoms worldwide- Cape Floral Kingdom. On both sides of the highway, one can contemplate dense patches of lilac heath during the winter and spring months.

Tsitsikamma "place of abundant waters"- encompasses forests, fynbos, rocky shores, estuaries, mountains, ...

Inspired by the great biodiversity of the area, Erica emerged.

Arbor Week Ladies (YAN 2014)

Meet the Arbor Week Ladies
Arbor Week Ladies in the making
The Storms River Township ladies perpetuating Arbor Week (South Africa celebrated it's first Arbor Day in 1983).

To promote awareness for the importance of indigenous trees (nearly 2000 species in South Africa), every Arbor Week celebration highlights two or three specific trees, one common and one rare species. In 2014 the trees being highlighted are:
  • Common: Lavender Trees or Laventelbome (Genus Heteropyxis)
  • Rare: White Ironwood or Witysterhout (Vepris lanceolata)
Greening is much needed in disadvantage communities who often live in barren areas. Hence, every year local governmental institutions and NGOs run Arbor Week campaigns in towns, townships and informal settlements around South Africa.

Ladybird (YAN 2014)

Ladybird
My attempt at drawing a male figure ended up with ladybird. Obviously I can't draw men:( Might need to hire a male model one day, hihi we'll see...

My apologies for the skewed photo, wanted to take another pic but the painting isn't with me anymore.

 Anita (YAN 2010)

Meet Anita

Mauritius is one of the most cosmopolitan countries worldwide.

Even though I might be able to blend in with the my Chinese folks, I do have Chinese, Indian, African, European blood running through my veins.

Queen Anne's Lace (YAN 2010)

Queen Anne's Lace
Five years in Ontario can't go by without noticing the Queen Anne's Lace. Daucus carotais, member of the carrot family, has been 'reclaiming the land from so-called civilisation'.

In North America, it bears the noxious weed tag, pretty nevertheless...

And yes, Avatar came out before I painted Queen Anne's Lace. Want to think the idea of the blue woman was entirely mine though.

Pink Dunes (YAN 2010)

Pink Dunes
Made this one for a little student of mine, Arianna- miss her loads.
